Actually, it's kind of nice in this era of comics to see some people from other countries (and in John's case non-mainstream US culture) doing things like farming and having tea and going to a concert and wearing normal clothes while chasing down a mutant with flaming torches. Meanwhile Storm is a rain goddess and John wrestles bison!
One later retcon that I really liked in light of this scene with Ororo was that Charles met her when she was living on the streets in Cairo and maybe/probably influenced her to later go along with him. She really doesn't have a great reason to do so right now.
