I paid for a month HBO Max subscription for Heated Rivalry, but then after watching that I was like, oh, they have all of Adventure Time, and the Distant Lands specials, and Fionna and Cake, I wonder if I can watch all of that in a month?

...The answer to that is yes, actually. Massive Adventure Time marathon. Having many feelings about post-apocalyptic gender and identity, and also 🩷🖤bubbline, and also aaaah Huntress Wizard aaah!

I'd never actually finished it when it was on an Australian streaming service, so I finally got to see the final seasons and Marceline and Bubblegum getting back together ♥ and Finn growing up! I truly thought no finale could live up to ten seasons of build up, and I won't say it was perfect, but it was pretty good. I was moved! If you told me at the beginning of the series that I would end up with so many emotions about Ice King, I would not have believed you, but there's some very rich stuff there about loss of identity, especially with regards to his relationship with Betty.

Fionna and Cake also does some pretty interesting stuff, and is especially thoughtful about gender. To the point where I really liked it even though I didn't particularly like the main characters.

Anyway, I had a great time with that. And literally the night after I finished this massive TV marathon I went out to see two movies.

First: Hamnet, which only just released here. It's interesting, though I don't think it was entirely successful for me. I have to admit I did laugh when he took his shirt off to go swimming and it turned out Will Shakespeare had abs. Not Marvel abs or anything, but certainly more visible abs than I would believe the average Elizabethan playwright to have.

My tears were not jerked out of me, alas, and there was so much shaky cam, but I did think the most interesting part was Read more... )

I feel like there used to be a lot more of this kind of film, so I like that it seems fairly successful, even if I wasn't nearly as moved as I wanted to be.

Then I went to see No Other Choice, which was kind of funny. I did laugh. I also didn't find it as funny as I wanted, but it certainly wasn't bad. It ends basically in exactly the place you think it will end, and I do find it an effective satire. Apparently it's loosely based on a Donald E. Westlake story? The best part was some of the comedy of errors at the start of his attempt at a murder spree, and then later it was kind of sad. I'm not sad I went to see it, anyway, even if I was very tired when the movie let out and the cinema had already closed down their escalators.

sunny FreyOn the eve of what the media is promising will be a snowpocalypse, I offer you a few St. John's Cemetery shots from about a week ago when we had recent but less snow. The sky in them was very pretty. You can see the eight photos at my Flickr.

+++

It’s impossible to find snow boots at a brick and mortar store nearby, and my feet don’t let me pick something willynilly online. I’m facing this storm with breaking 30-year-old boots I have to stick plastic bags in and sneakers.

+++

I am so bored with Bleach: Thousand-Year Blood War. At this point, I feel like it's been going on forever without revealing much I actually want to know, like what Uryu's deal is (in the anime). It's been so long I barely care anymore. (The manga didn't take this long.) It looks pretty but that's not enough.

+++

I've been watching several videos from Captain Pikant, whom one commenter said was Bob Ross but with drum machines. I don't understand all the technical stuff involved but there's something so satisfying in how the different elements come together to gradually become the song you recognize. Also, it really makes you appreciate how much work goes into the music. The videos have a great aesthetic and moments of humor and are well edited, and the visualizer used gives the viewer an idea of the elements involved. Like, all the drum stuff in Michael Sembello's "Maniac" is, well, insane. At the end of each breakdown, they do an instrumental cover of the song.

So far, I've watched that, "Blue Monday," "Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This)" (it turns out the typewriter type thing in their music video I didn't understand was a drum machine), "You Spin Me Round," a drum machine analysis of three Nine Inch Nails songs, and a similar analysis of three Depeche Mode songs.

There was a lot more cowbell in the '80s than I realized.

I really want a Beatbunny T-shirt.

Voting is up for Round 22 of [community profile] tvmovie20in20 - Please vote for your favorite Theme, Category and Artists' Choice. Round 23 sign-ups are up and I'm planning on joining it, I just don't know what subject to do. I kinda want do a "new" show, so I'm thinking between High Potential, Doc, Heated Rivalry or Fallout. I'd love to do The Hunting Party but sadly I cannot find a source for screencaps and I was only able to download a handful of images for the show on their official site. EDIT: I did just find Melissa Roxburgh fansite with a gallery! YAY! So probably going to go with The Hunting Party unless I go with her character for the next round of [community profile] characters20in20 - again I haven't quite decided. Maybe both? The Hunting Party for tvmovie, and her character for characters?

Managed to upload all my femslash to the Sunset Archive. I don't have a lot, so it's kinda faster to upload those in comparison to my other works I still need to upload to AO3 and then SquidgeWorld. Sunset is pretty small, so there's not a lot of works already there. Kinda like for CFAA. BTW the [community profile] fandomtrees gifts were revealed - ended up getting three fics, A Shared Space by Sobriquett (Bridgerton, Kate/Anthony), Bone Deep Cold by jenab (The Flash CW, Barry/Caitlin), and Once More, With Feeling by freevistas (Sense8, Lito/Hernando/Dani) which are all VERY lovely, please read them if you like the pairings. Also received some SHIP banners (now located on my profile page) by the lovely [personal profile] maevedarcy (Again, soooo pretty! I miss ship buttons/banners!). Also received this post's icon (Annalise/Nathan/Gabriel from the Bastard Son & Devil Himself) by [personal profile] goodbyebird which is ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFUL!

In response of three peoples' trees, I've made three MCU fics a Baby From Another Universe (Bucky/Yelena, Alexei/Melina), only one bed (for three) (Darcy/Pietro/Wanda), and girlfriend's new pet (Kate/Yelena). Plus made some icons and a book rec for others.

Speaking of Annalise/Nathan/Gabriel, I have just a week left for my prompt of "Hold Each Other by A Great Big World" for [community profile] smallfandomfest which I love the song, and someone early on had made a fanvid for the ship (very pretty, check it out!) which I love... but so far, hasn't inspired me which sucks 'cause it's like the perfect song for them. Ugh, I hate writer's block... If anyone happens to see this and can prompt with something they'd like to see for OT3 please let me know (or feel free to message me if you want to be private).

I don't think I posted about Amperslash when it revealed, but I got a lovely gift!

The Ties that Bind Us (Biggles, slightly ambiguous Biggles/EvS)
A very fun, sensual fic in which they are trying to squirm out of ropes tying them together, while also talking about Feelings.

And I got THREE gifts in Holiday Airdrop, the Biggles exchange I run! This time around, all are gen and Algy & EvS-focused.

Soft Landings, a wonderfully well realized, hurt/comforty AU in which Algy is the first person on the team to encounter Erich during Buries a Hatchet.

A Silver-Topped Cane is a lovely little post-Terai bit of comfort and bonding, in which Erich offers advice and maybe a little commiseration while Algy is healing.

Forge is deliciously iddy and visceral h/c in which EvS and Algy are handcuffed together in the desert.

Between the two exchanges, I wrote five fics, including some pairings I don't normally write! I'm looking forward to getting to 'fess up to them.

A teenage boy, Ambrose, wakes up on a spaceship with no memory of how he got there. OS, the AI programmed with his mother's voice, reminds him that he's on a mission to rescue his sister, who went to Titan two years ago and sent out a distress call. And also, he has a surprise companion on a journey he thought would be solo: Kodiak, a teenage boy from the rival nation, who is ensconced in his own quarters and refuses to come out.

Ambrose, who is a typical teenager in lots of ways apart from being a genius and an astronaut, manages to coax Kodiak out and immediately starts thinking lustful thoughts about him. Kodiak, whose country is much more austere and militarized than Ambrose's, very gradually warms up to him.

And then what I thought was going to be a slow-burn gay YA romance in a science fiction setting takes a huge left turn. To be fair, it does still centrally involve a gay YA romance. But the science fiction aspect isn't just there as a cool background. It's actually a YA science fiction novel that has a romance along with a plot that goes in multiple unexpected directions, and is very moving in a way that's only possible because of the science fiction elements.

If you're a stickler for hard science fiction in which everything is definitely possible/likely, this probably has at least one too many "I don't think that's likely to work that way" moments for you. But if you'd like to read a fun and touching science fiction adventure-romance that will probably surprise you at least once, just read the book without knowing anything more.

Beware the potential spoilers behind the cuts. And if by any chance you are a fan of any of these, please let me know your thoughts!

Starfleet Academy
- watched the first two episodes of it tonight and I enjoyed it. It was a little weird, 'cause it was a different set up than I was expecting (I did not watch any trailers going into it, nor any news articles other than the fact that Tig Notaro and the Doctor from Voyager would be in it). Read more... )

The Hunting Party - Season 2 started airing, and I'm enjoying it so far, I really loved Season 1 so I was excited to see it return. I just did a rewatch it (first season is only 10 episodes so it's a semi-quick rewatch) - still love it! It stars Melissa Roxburgh (from Manifest and Tracker) as Bex Henderson, Nick Wechsler (aka Kyle from Roswell) as Oliver Odell, Josh McKenzie (from La Brea) as Shane Florence, Patrick Sabongui (David Singh from the Arrowverse) as Jacob Hassani and Sara Garcia (apparently also from The Flash) as Jennifer Morales. Read more... )The fandom for the show is super small but hopefully it grows more. I definitely recommend it if you enjoyed the Blacklist or Fringe or Mindhunter or other procedural type shows.

Animal Control - came to Netflix and it made me realize I missed a whole season (season 3), so I did a rewatch of the series and am currently up to date. I laughed out loud a lot with this show and I really enjoyed it. If anyone likes animals and enjoyed Community, I'd say you'd like this. This is also a small fandom? Not a lot of fanworks (gifs or fics that I could find). I did come out of this rewatch shipping completely different ship Read more... )

Stumble - NBC's newest show that reminds me a lot of early Glee (and weirdly Pitch Perfect). It's sitcom show filmed mock-documentary style for the most part I guess like the Office but it's about the cheer coach and her cheerleaders. Jenn Lyon (Esther Finch from Dead Boy Detectives) portrays the coach, Courteney and I absolutely love her (definitely on my favorite characters). Kristin Chenoweth is Tammy Istiny, former assistant coach to Courteney and even though her storyline is predictable - I like her. I think my favorite cheerleader on the team are Peaches and Madonna though. But the whole team is great. Definitely check it out if you like sitcoms, although like Animal Control might not be for everyone. Again super small fandom.

DMV - enjoying this sitcom a lot and I am appreciating that it is not a mock-documentary type show - while I like Stumble, I do not enjoy that concept of a sitcom. Now this show reminds me of Parks & Rec, so I recommend it if you enjoyed that show or Community.

Fallout - THE LATEST EPISODE MAN. So many feelings. Did I expect what happened would happen? Duh. It's not that huge of a surprise but the WAY it was shot was. Beautiful. I do of course want like fix-it Ghoulcy fics right now though...

Doc - these last few episodes are so emotional, and I did not really expect to see where it took them. Read more... )

High Potential
- I really liked this episode, and I enjoyed the Morgan/Karadec scenes of course. Read more... )

I got my panoramic X-ray of my teeth done, supposedly covered by my insurance. And was told that I should get braces or Invisalign! Because apparently my orthodontist in the late '80s should have made me wear a retainer nightly for the rest of my life instead of just a few years. That was a kick in the head. But I don't see anything like the degree of overbite I once had, I'm not in pain, and there's no way Medicaid would cover it so it's not happening.

Having gotten the X-rays it demanded, Medicaid decided not to cover the crowns my dentist wanted me to get, surprising no one except possibly my dentists. This is a reason why I didn't want to pay for those X-rays myself. So instead I got two fillings. Plus, another filling I needed, and did them all in one visit. Ow. The worst part was that anesthetic injection that felt like the needle went all the way into the jaw joint and the dentist had to physically hold me down for it.

I dyed my hair red again last week, from how I'd gotten tired of my roots' dark brown growth and how my hair needed two different types of hair care (virgin roots versus color-treated and somewhat dry length) and how I appreciate any color I can give myself during the bleak winter. It's currently a somewhat gothy dark auburn-y red with some brown. My silver hairs are already reestablishing themselves, so shame on you, L'Oréal Paris, shame.

It took me forever to get through it, though the back half is easier to get into a flow reading it than the front.

With this book I ordered from the library, I didn't know it had "a novel" on the cover until I received it. And it has the kind of bs I associate with books that have "a novel" on the cover. This is why I prefer genre fiction.

Found out a "fanweek" happening next month that I'm interested in DC Rarepair Week (Feb 8-14), we shall see if I remember it. I'm interested in participating because I tend to ship a lot of rare or rare-ish ships for DC. I'm going to try for pairings I haven't written before... or maybe just any since I technically haven't written any DC stuff in 6 years (the last being Courtney/Henry Jr. of Stargirl TV series and Kara/Maxwell of Supergirl TV series). Both are actually extremely rare pairings.

Also discovered a DC Fandom Events tumblr, which lists & tracks various DC challenges & when they are happening which is helpful because I've been wondering what other "fanweeks" would be happening this year since I know a good portion of fandoms are located on other platforms such as AO3 or Tumblr or Discords now and not everything is promoted to [community profile] fandomcalendar or [community profile] whenisitdue or one of the other communities about events. Usually I stumble upon them way after they are done - plus fanlore's fanweeks category are mostly about ones years past and as far as I can tell on all the ones I was interested in only happened once or twice.  Discovered Raven/Dick apparently has their own "fanweek" in the past so hopefully a new one happens this year - I just have to remember to check in April. According AO3 tags, there is less than 700 works for Raven/Dick so they can be considered rarepair for the DC Rarepair Week.

Are there any "fanweeks" you are looking forward to this year? Or one that you hope will happen again? Doesn't have to be DC or Marvel...

One rainy day Kanade, a high school student, finds a mouse-sized cat in his room. It's a fairy cat or "palm-sized cat!" They are elusive magical creatures which sometimes adopt humans, but mostly behave like ordinary cats. Only extra-tiny!

That's about it for the plot. What this manga is actually about is showing an incredibly adorable tiny cat being an incredibly adorable tiny cat. It's an incredibly adorable manga. Proof:

The Huntress, by Kate Quinn

16 Jan 2026 11:41 am
rachelmanija: (Books: old)
[personal profile] rachelmanija

In this engrossing historical novel, three storylines converge on a single target, a female Nazi nicknamed the Huntress. During the war, we follow Nina, one of the Soviet women who flew bomber runs and were known as the Night Witches. After the war, we follow Ian, a British war correspondent turned Nazi hunter, who has teamed up with Nina to hunt down the Huntress as Nina is one of the very few people who saw her face and survived. At the same time, in Boston, we follow Jordan, a young woman who wants to be a photographer and is suspicious of the beautiful German immigrant her father wants to marry...

In The Huntress, we often know what has happened or surely must happen, but not why or how; we know Nina somehow ended up facing off with the Huntress, but not how she got there or how she escaped; we know who Jordan's stepmom-to-be is and that she'll surely be unmasked eventually, but not how or when that'll happen or how the confrontation will go down. There's a lot of suspense but none of it depends on shocking twists, though there are some unexpected turns.

Nina and Jordan are very likable and compelling, especially Nina who is kind of a force of nature. It took me a while to warm up to Ian, but I did about halfway through. Nina's story is fascinating and I could have read a whole novel just about her and her all-female regiment, but I never minded switching back to Jordan as while her life is more ordinary, it's got this tense undercurrent of creeping horror as she and everyone around her are being gaslit and manipulated by a Nazi.

This is the kind of satisfying, engrossing historical novel that I think used to be more common, though this one probably has a lot more queerness than it would have had if it had been written in the 80s - a woman/woman relationship is central to the story, and there are multiple other queer characters. It has some nice funny moments and dialogue to leaven a generally serious story (Nina in particular can be hilarious), and there's some excellent set piece action scenes. If my description sounds good to you, you'll almost certainly enjoy it.

Spoilers! Read more... )

Quinn has written multiple historical novels, mostly set during or around WW2. This is the first I've read but it made me want to read more of hers.

Content notes: Wartime-typical violence, gaslighting, a child in danger. The Huntress murdered six children, but this scene does not appear on-page. There is no sexual assault and no scenes in concentration camps.

On the Beach by Nevil Shute - which has its flaws as a book (it's certainly not scientifically rigorous and the prose is often clumsy), but I was emotionally overcome by the ending. I think even more so because it's such a slow burner, so much about incredibly ordinary people with no real effect on the world living out their last days. You don't get the point of view of politicians or geniuses or movers and shakers, and the one guy from CSIRO you only get his point of view toward the end when he's thinking about how he'll spend his remaining days. Just normal people living in denial, or numbing themselves with alcohol, or deciding to do things they never got to before, or finding ways to fill out their days and trying not to think of all the things they'll never get to do.
